2020 Full Season Review

The 2020 season in Danish karting can well be described as the season that almost never happened. This is of course because of the extreme challenge of trying to go racing while in the middle of an ongoing pandemic.

NHR Racing Team was looking forward to an existing season in the Danish National Championship and the DSK Series. This year the team was also set to compete in the special events “CPH Open” and “DM Revanchen” However, as the season opener neared it became clear that the early part of the season would be disrupted by the quickly spreading Covid-19 virus.

In March, the season opener of the DSK Series was postponed to a later date as the whole country went on a lockdown to limit the spread of the virus. Hopes were still high that the season would resume quickly. However as the months progressed, it became clear that racing under the strict restrictions during the lockdown would not be possible. As mid-summer approached, round two and three of the DSK Series was cancelled as well was the CPH Open event.

In August it was confirmed that the DSK-DIF Danish National Championship would be moved into September in order for the event to be run. Everything went ahead as planned but in the week leading up to the event it was confirmed that the last remaining DSK Series event would be cancelled. That would leave the National Championship as the only DSK organized event of the year.

The DSK-DIF Danish National Championship would be held at one of the finest racing facilities in the country, the Rødby Karting Circuit. In a “ray of sunshine” during a very difficult year, the event would take place under perfect autumn weather conditions. 19 drivers competed in the KZ2 class including NHR driver Nicklas Rasmussen. The race for NHR Racing Team would be very challenging since much of the time was spend making up for the extremely limited on-track time the team have had before the race. During the weekend, the team would have some stable heat races, but overall race performance was lacking a bit. In the championship deciding finale, Nicklas Rasmussen would make it up to 11th place early in the race. However, during the race, he would drop to 14th place and finish the championship in that position.

The only remaining race on the calendar would be the traditional season ending race “DM Revanchen” that was due to take place in October. The last few years the race had regularly been cancelled due to insufficient driver signups. However this year, the race would be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic that had started to regather its spread again during the autumn months.

The 2020 season has been a season like no other and would only bring one race for NHR Racing Team to compete in. We are nevertheless happy that it was possible for the race organizers to reschedule the date for the national championship and find a small window where it was possible for racing to resume for a brief time.

We are now looking forward to the 2021 season that will hopefully have a non-interrupted schedule.

Race Report: DIF Danish National Championship 2020

The only DSK organized race of the season would be the DSK-DIF Danish National Championship. This year the race event would take place at the internationally approved Rødby Karting Circuit. The event would be a challenging one for NHR Racing Team, however progress was made through the weekend. Team driver, Nicklas Rasmussen would finish in 14th place in the KZ2 class championship.

Friday – Practice:
During the free practice sessions, the team would try and make up for the extremely limited on-track time the team have had this year. However, problems with the kart setup would take much of the focus during these sessions, and it was only near the end of the day that the team found a decent solution to these issues, meaning that the planed long runs would not be completed.

Saturday – Qualifying:
Before the first morning warm-up session the team would discover an issue with the engine that required fixing before it was able to run. Therefore, the team only managed to complete an installation lap in the second and final warm-up session. With no qualifying practice, the team would get Nicklas out as the first driver in the qualifying session to get a reference lap in clear air. Then after he got his laps in, he would then cool his tires and try and get in line with the other drivers on the track to give it another go. Nicklas would qualify in 18th place out of the 19 drivers, meaning he would start in that position in the heat races.

Saturday – Heat Race 1:
The team felt slightly more optimistic about the race pace of the kart. Nicklas got off to a decent start and would move up a few positions in the opening laps of the heat. The race pace of the kart was consistent but near the end of the heat the balance would go away. Despite of this, Nicklas was able to defend his position and finish the heat in 14th place.

Saturday – Heat Race 2:
In the second heat, Nicklas would once again get off to a decent start, but he was not able to make the most of it because the drivers ahead. The team had tried a setup adjustment to try and keep the balance through the entire race distance, however the overall race pace suffered because of this, and Nicklas would finish the heat in 15th place.

Sunday – Pre-Finale:
The result of the pre-finale would set the grid for the all-important championship deciding finale. Nicklas, starting from 15th place on the grid, would stick with the tires that he qualified on. However, some drivers around him would use their final fresh set of tires to try and make up some positions before the finale. Before the race, the team would finetune the kart setup and Nicklas would go on to have a solid race where he would finish in 14th place.

Sunday – Finale:
The team would fit a brand-new set of tires for the finale for extra performance. Nicklas would get of to a great start and use the fresh tires to the maximum and move up to 11th place during the opening laps. However, the pace was still lacking a bit compered to the midfield drivers and Nicklas would drop a few places as the race went on. Nicklas would finish the Danish National Championship in 14th place.

Nicklas Rasmussen - KZ2 Race Driver:
We expected a difficult event since we have had almost no pre-season testing this year, so we set our expectations accordingly. To be honest I was still hoping for us to be a bit more competitive then we were, and it looks like we have lost a bit of performance compered to last year. Regardless of this we still had a solid event, where we managed the problems we had quite well, with our limited resources taken into account. I would really like to thank the team, especially my mechanic for all the hard work that made it possible for us to compete. I know that this is a challenging time for our little team, but we will keep working hard as we have always done. I would also like to thank GP-Racing Denmark for the fantastic support that they gave us through the weekend.

Race Preview: DSK / DIF Danish National Championship 2020
(+ Important update on the DSK Finale)
This year have seen all major events in Danish karting, that was due to take place in the spring and summer canceled due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. However, the biggest race of the year will go ahead this weekend at the finest kart racing facility in the country, the Rødby International Karting Circuit.

The DSK / DIF Danish National Karting Championship is the only race that has a status as an official national championship. Unlike the DSK Series where points towards the championship are awarded at every round, the winner of the DSK / DIF National Championship is the driver who wins the finale on Sunday.

Important update: Cancelation of the DSK-Series Finale.
The DSK / DIF Danish National Karting Championship is set to be the only DSK organized event of the year. The only remaining race of the DSK Series that was scheduled to take place next weekend (25/09 - 27/09-2020) have been canceled, meaning the entire series have had all the events called off.

Nicklas Rasmussen – KZ2 Race driver:
I am very exited to finally get back racing again. This has been the longest time away from racing that I have had in my time in motorsports. The DIF National Championship is not only the most important race of the year, it is also likely to the only race of the year for me, so I will make sure to enjoy it as much as possible. However, I think for us, we must keep our expectations in check, since we have had almost no running at all this year, not even testing, so I expect a very challenging weekend for us. With that being said, we have some time to learn throughout the weekend, in the qualification heats, where we can hopefully bring us in a decent position for the all-important finale on Sunday afternoon. During the finale, anything can happen so at that point all we can do is go out and give it everything we have to get the best result possible!

The race can be watched post-live on the TV network "Sport Live" (https://www.sport-live.dk/om-sport-live) and more information about the 2020 DIF Danish National Championship can be found on wwww.dansksuperkart.dk

2020 season plan announced!

NHR Racing Team is proud to announce that we will be competing in 2020. We will continue our activities in the international shifter kart class "KZ2". Our strong partnership with GP Racing Denmark celebrates its fifth-year anniversary in 2020 and we are proud to be racing with "GP Karts" powered by "TM" engines again this year.

In 2020 we will once again be taking part in the biggest Danish kart race of the year - the DSK-DIF Danish National Championship. This year the race will be held at the internationally approved “Rødby Karting Circuit” The race is set to take place in late August.

We also intend to be competing in the Danish national DSK series. However due to budget limitations we are at the moment only set to compete on a part time schedule at selected events. However, this has the possibility of being changed if we can get the necessary funding for a full DSK season.

Finally, we also intend to compete in the event "DM Revanchen" This race is a stand-alone event held at the Copenhagen karting Circuit, and we will be competing if the KZ2 class is being raced at the event.
